The second half of Rivals season two starts on Wednesday, November 11, on Disney+ in the UK and internationally and on Hulu in the United States. It opens with three episodes, numbers seven, eight and nine, and then one a week: episode ten on November 18, episode eleven on November 25 and the last on December 2.

David Tennant returns as Tony Baddingham and Aidan Turner as Declan O'Hara, as the war between Venturer and Corinium moves into a new stage. Part one arrived in May and ended in June, and its closing moment had Rupert telling Tony about Monica's death, so the break left the story hanging. The show is based on Jilly Cooper's novel, and I think the tone of cheerful excess is a large part of why it works.

Disney+ has already renewed it for a third season of twelve episodes, announced on June 16, though there is no release window yet. A renewal before the second season has even finished tells you how seriously the platform takes the show.

What I enjoy about Rivals is that it is unashamedly silly and very well made. The costumes are great, the cast is deep, and nobody on screen pretends the stakes are anything other than ego and appetite. After a year of grim prestige drama, that is a relief.

Are you following it weekly or saving it up for a long Sunday? And who do you think wins the war?
