DT Next's Deepavali preview, updated on October 16, says Tamil films will reach theatres on November 5 and 6, with Diwali itself falling on Sunday, November 8. The article says four Tamil films are coming but names three: Mookuthi Amman 2, Appa Kutti and Moon Walk. It does not give separate dates for them.

Mookuthi Amman 2 stars Nayanthara and is directed by Sundar C, with music by Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi. Its teaser, called Rise of Mahasakthi, promises grand visuals and spiritual elements, and the film is also releasing in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Appa Kutti stars Vijay Antony and is directed by M. Maran, a father and daughter story mixing action and family sentiment.

Moon Walk stars Prabhudheva, is directed by Manoj Nirmala Sridharan and puts dance and music at the centre. Its big draw is the reunion of Prabhudheva and A. R. Rahman after almost twenty-five years. Elsewhere, the article says, the Hindi epic Ramayana is the big competitor, with Part 1 scheduled for November 5.

The most striking line is that no film from Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay or Ajith Kumar is on the festive list this year. That makes Diwali an opening for mid-sized films, and it will tell us what a Tamil festival weekend looks like without the usual stars.

Which Tamil film are you most curious about? I am watching Moon Walk for the music.
