What to Watch This Halloween Weekend: Clayface, Wildwood, Klara and a Bloke in a Yellow Tracksuit

Carved pumpkins glowing at night

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, which means the cinemas are stacked and you only have so many evenings. My pick, if you want something that actually fits the weekend, is Clayface. It is a DC film that plays as a proper body-horror picture rather than a superhero one, and it is the sort of thing you want to see with a crowd that jumps at the right moments.

If you would rather go gentler, Wildwood is the stop-motion option from Laika and it is beautiful to look at even when the story wanders. Klara and the Sun is the quiet one, with Jenna Ortega as the artificial friend from the Ishiguro novel, and reviews have split right down the middle, so go in knowing it asks for patience. And then there is Ali G: Who Iz I?, which is exactly as daft as the title suggests and probably the loudest screening you will find all weekend.

The holdovers are worth a look too. Street Fighter is still pulling a crowd after its big opening, Hope is hanging on with strong word of mouth, and Obsession is the sleeper that people keep recommending to me. That is a lot of choice for one weekend. What are you going to see?
