Godzilla Minus Zero Lands November 6, and Minus One Fans Should Be Very Happy

The Godzilla statue in Tokyo

Godzilla Minus One was the best monster movie in years and it cost less than most streaming comedies, so the sequel was never in doubt. Godzilla Minus Zero opens in Japan on November 3 and in North American cinemas on November 6, after a gala premiere at the New York Film Festival. Takashi Yamazaki is back as director, writer and visual effects lead, which is the combination that made the first one work.

The story picks up in 1949, two years after Minus One, and stays with the Shikishima family. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return, along with most of the first film's supporting cast, and Min Tanaka joins as a biologist carrying his own scars from the war. There is a leaked plot summary doing the rounds about something ancient stirring under the forest at the foot of Mount Fuji, but I would treat that as rumour until the film says otherwise.

Two small details that excite me: it is the first Japanese production shot for IMAX, and Yamazaki has said he wants the human story to lead again rather than the spectacle. That is exactly why Minus One landed. I already have my ticket for opening weekend. Who else is in?
