The Minecraft sequel has a real title, A Minecraft Movie Squared, and it has apparently finished filming. The production listings moved it to post-production in September, which lines up with the July 23, 2027 release date that Warner Bros. locked in a year ago. Jared Hess is directing again and co-wrote the script with Chris Galletta, so this is the same team that made a billion dollars out of a film critics mostly shrugged at.
The new face is Kirsten Dunst as Alex. If you stayed for the post-credits scene of the first film you saw Alex briefly, voiced by Kate McKinnon and played in person by Alice May Connolly, and the sequel recasts the role properly. Dunst's casting was revealed at Minecraft Live in the spring and the first look at her in costume came out recently, along with what looks very much like Herobrine in the background, which the fans have been dissecting frame by frame.

Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge are all back. Coolidge's subplot with a villager was the thing my nephew quoted for six months, so I assume it continues. The first film was made for about $150 million and took $955 million worldwide, so the sequel will have a bigger budget and, I would guess, a lot more of the Overworld on screen.

I did not love the first one and I understand that my opinion is irrelevant, because the children have spoken. Are you dreading or counting down to July 2027?
