Gunmaaster G9 opens worldwide on November 27, the last Friday of the month and two days after the Thanksgiving glut in the US, and this week it picked up an overseas distribution deal with Phars Films, the Dubai-based outfit that handles a lot of Hindi releases in the Gulf. Pen Marudhar reportedly has the all-India rights. For a mid-budget Emraan Hashmi film, that is a healthy setup.

The title is a nod to the 1979 Bollywood spy film Gunmaster G9, the Mithun Chakraborty one, though this is not a remake. Aditya Datt directs, Genelia Deshmukh is the female lead in one of her rare recent roles, and Aparshakti Khurana is in support. The first song, Afsaana Banaaya Aapne, features Himesh Reshammiya, which tells you the tone is retro and unserious.

Hashmi has had a good couple of years as a character actor in other people's films and this is his first proper lead in a while. The motion poster he released with the date had him in a sharp suit with a pistol and a moustache, and it looks like a comedy that happens to have spies in it, which is the correct way to do a film called Gunmaaster.

The teaser is reportedly going to play in cinemas attached to Toxic, the Yash film, which is the biggest possible launch pad for a smaller release. November 27 is clear of Ramayana's main run and ahead of the December heavyweights, so there is a window if the word of mouth is good.

I like Hashmi best when he is allowed to be funny and slightly sleazy, which is what the Gunmaster premise seems to want. Is this on your list, or is November already full with Ramayana and Suryaa?
