Avengers: Doomsday Keeps Teasing With TV Spots, and the Full Trailer Still Has No Date

Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday marketing has settled into a pattern that is driving fans slightly mad: short, sharp spots with new shots in each, and no full trailer. The World Series spot ran during Game 1 on Fox on October 23, about a minute long, opening on Earth-828 and ending with Doctor Doom taking over the broadcast. A second thirty-second spot followed a couple of days later. The film is seven weeks out, on December 18.

The spots have given people a lot to argue about. The second one extends a Paul Rudd joke about Captain America and has more of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and a number of people are convinced Evans's face has been digitally altered in it, de-aged or tidied up for a scene set at an earlier point. Others think Rogers was cut out of the first trailer and quietly put back. I have watched it frame by frame and I honestly cannot tell.

What we know: Robert Downey Jr. is Doom, the Fantastic Four cross over, the X-Men from the Fox era are in it with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, and the Russo brothers are directing their third Avengers film. The three Captain Americas shot, with Evans, Anthony Mackie and Rudd, was in the earlier promo and it is still the image Marvel is leading with.

The missing trailer is a choice. Marvel has decided that a film with this much cast does not need to show its plot, and the TV spots are doing the job of keeping the title in the conversation every week without giving away what Doom actually wants. It is annoying as a fan and probably correct as a strategy, because the thing people want to see is the thing they will pay to see.

The rumour mill says a full trailer comes with the next big sports broadcast. I have stopped believing rumours about this film. Are you still hyped, or has the drip-feed worn you down?
